In Australia, baby drown on a regular basis. Sadly some ten to hundred babies and children drown each year in swimming pools.* However, many people think that this could have been avoided and it could have been. and pool safety fences as well as better supervision of children and babies at home, in the pool area and in other locations is important. Moreover, it is important for parents and carers as well as teachers, life savers and life guards to know CPR so that if a child starts drowning or has drowned they can perform CPR which may be able resusitate drowned children. Recently, in Sydney a new report commented on a mother in Penrith, New South Wales who was able to save the life of their very young child by means of CPR. Therefore you should know about the risk of pools towards children and current ways and methods (e.g. ) which may help prevent drowning.
There are a number of ways that you as a parent (whether mother or father), grandparent, guardian and/or carer that you can minimise the risk of your children, grandchilden or other person drowning in swimming pools. One method is to ensure that your pool safety fences meet the Goverment requirements with regard to pool safety and pool fence laws. For example do you have an old pool water filter or leaf catch where peoples hair has got caught on which has caused them to drown. Secondly, it is important that you have a Resuscitation Flow Chart in the pool area (near the ). This can come in handy and instruct anyone what to do if someone drowns or chokes and requires CPR (compumonary resuscitation) or other resucitation. Also, ensure that the Resuscitation Flow Chart is up-to-date with current CPR and First Aid guidelines. You may need to update this flow chart yearly or at the very least every two years. For example, one change recently is that you do not need to check for a pulse as this can take too long to do. Also replace any which have holes in them. Do your flow chart still show this? If it does you should check if it is up-to-date and change it. More a flow chart should show how to perform resucitation on children and on adults. As both adults and children need different amounts of breaths/compressions. Other safety considerations include the use of handrails to enter and exit water, having slip resistant surfaces. Ensuring water is clean and not dirty nor misty (which can help with). Ensure that water is neither too shallow nor to deep and ensure that there are no sharp objects or other sharp objects in the pool area. Also, ensure that there are no trip hazards in the pool area and make sure that the pool is easily accessible. It is important that all areas are flat (there should be no raised area) and please do make sure that all are on when the pool is finished with.
